The installation process for a ZEN Energy solar power system is fast, easy and simple, allowing you to slash your utility bills in just a few days.
The installation of solar power systems includes several important steps before you start generating your own power.
First, a ZEN Energy solar consultant will assess your home for its suitability for solar. This includes checking the type, angle and orientation of your roof, how much sunlight will hit your panels, how much electricity you will need and how much you can expect to generate.
This assessment will tell you what kind of solar power system you may need, any changes you may need to make prior to installation and, ultimately, whether your home and your needs are right for solar.
With the paperwork out of the way, your ZEN Energy solar consultant will then walk you through your new equipment:
If it’s thumbs up all around, sign on the dotted line and you’ve officially begun your solar journey.
Depending on where in New Zealand you live, you may need to file some paperwork and get approvals before your solar installation. This will reflect your local building and council codes, as well as the state of your local electricity supplier - they must be able to support your solar connection. If you’re going off-grid entirely, you won’t need to worry about local utilities!
Your ZEN Energy solar consultant will be able to set you in the right direction.
Electricity Network Connection Approval
Electricity Retailer Approval
Upon receiving approval from your network company, ZEN will work with your chosen energy retailer to finalise your distributed generation agreement. This will include the installation of an import/export meter where necessary.
Here’s the fun part! On installation day, ZEN Energy qualified installers will perform a final checkover of your solar system and your roof’s readiness. Once the boxes are ticked, your home will be wired for solar, the panels and racking will be placed, the inverter will be connected and, following a final approval from a local inspector, the system is switched on.
You are now enjoying clean, free solar energy. Congratulations!
Typically, the actual installation will take about a day for a grid-tied system, and up to two days for a more advanced hybrid or off-grid system
Depending on your solar power system package, you may have an energy monitoring application or portal. These allow you to keep track of your energy needs and generation.
Solar power systems have very few (if any) moving parts, so there is little maintenance -and if there are issues, all ZEN Energy equipment comes with a warranty. Solar panels generally last 25 years, and they should be inspected a few times a year for damage.
Cleaning is simple, requiring nothing more than a garden hose - but ask your ZEN Energy installer about any special cleaning requirements for your system
Grid-tied solar power systems are the most simple solar system, utilising panels, a solar inverter, and a racking system. Generally, these are the fastest to install.
Hybrid solar power systems and hybrid + backup solar power systems area little more complex, adding a hybrid inverter and smart software into the mix, as well as potentially batteries. These may take a little longer to install.
Off-grid solar power systems are the most advanced offering from ZEN Energy, allowing complete independence from the grid, including a raft of panels, racking, batteries, software, inverters and an optional generator. These systems take a few days to install, but offer the most significant solar savings.
How much solar power you need will depend on your solar power needs and your desired savings. The higher the kilowatts generated by your solar system, the more power you will enjoy.
As a rule of thumb, we’ve found that most residential homes in New Zealand will the following generation for maximum solar efficiency:

Your local electricity supplier may have a solar buyback program, where you can sellexcess power generated by your system back to the grid for solar credits.
This means not only are you saving money on your utility bill, but generating profit as well!
