AC Coupling Solar Power

An AC-coupled system uses an inverter to convert DC electricity generated by solar panels into AC electricity for powering a home. Surplus energy is then converted back into DC and stored in a solar battery. When the stored energy is needed, it is converted back into AC electricity using an AC-to-DC power unit, making it suitable for use in household appliances.

Advantages of AC Coupling:

  • Higher efficiency when used to power AC loads during the day such as air-conditioning, pool pumps, and hot water systems (up to 97% efficient).
  • Generally lower installation cost for larger systems above 6kW.
  • Can use multiple inverters in multiple locations (AC-coupled micro-grids)
  • Most inverters above 3kW have dual MPPT inputs, so long strings of panels can be installed at different orientations and tilt angles.
  • Advanced AC-coupled systems can use a combination of AC and DC coupling (Note: this is not possible with some ‘managed’ lithium batteries)

Disadvantages of AC Coupling:

  • Lower efficiency when charging a battery system - approx 85% to 90%
  • Inverter capacity may be limited to the Inverter-charger size.
  • Quality inverters can be expensive for small systems.
  • Lower efficiency when powering DC loads.

Installing a battery storage system can enhance your home's use of green energy, regardless of whether you choose an AC or DC coupled system. If you already have a solar panel system in place, and are looking to add battery storage as a retrofit, Zen Energy will always install an AC-coupled system. This is because it will work seamlessly with the existing solar inverter system.

However, if you're installing a solar panel and battery system at the same time, a DC-coupled system may be more suitable due to its higher efficiency. At ZEN Energy, we install all of our Solar PV Systems as Hybrid DC to AC Systems. This is because hybrid systems, or grid-tied DC coupled solar battery systems, have fewer failure points, require less wiring, and have less impact on the national grid.

If you're interested in installing a solar PV system for your home or business, or upgrading your current storage solution, contact ZEN Energy for more information.

Grid Tied Solar Systems

Solar Power to Your Home During the Day

Not quite ready to let go of the grid? We get it. Our Grid-Tied solar power systems power your home or business while staying connected to the main power grid. If your solar generation isn’t enough, the grid kicks in seamlessly – meaning you’ll never be without power (unless there is a power cut!). Vice versa, if your solar power system generates more electricity than you need, the excess goes back to the grid and you’ll receive a credit on your next power bill.

Yes, energy storage can typically be added to an existing solar installation. However, it is important to ensure that the energy storage system is compatible with your existing system and that it is installed correctly.

The lifespan of an energy storage system depends on several factors, including the type of battery, the usage patterns, and the maintenance of the system. Lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in solar systems, typically have a lifespan of 10-15 years.

Yes, energy storage systems require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and lifespan. This includes monitoring the system for any issues, performing regular maintenance checks, and replacing any faulty components as needed.

Yes, most energy storage systems can be expanded if your energy needs change in the future. However, it is important to ensure that the system is designed to allow for expansion and that any upgrades or additions are compatible with your existing system.

Energy storage can improve the overall efficiency of your solar installation by allowing you to use more of the energy produced by your solar panels. This can reduce your reliance on the grid and help you avoid high electricity rates during peak usage times.

The amount of energy that can be stored with an energy storage system depends on several factors, including the size of the system and the capacity of the batteries. Typically, residential energy storage systems can store anywhere from 5-20 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy.

Yes, energy storage can help you save money on your electricity bills by allowing you to use more of the energy produced by your solar panels. This can reduce your reliance on the grid and help you avoid high electricity rates during peak usage times.

It depends on the type of energy storage system you choose and your existing solar system. Some energy storage systems may require additional equipment or upgrades to your solar system to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

Yes, it is possible to sell excess stored energy back to the grid through net metering programs. These programs allow you to receive credit for excess energy produced by your solar panels and stored in your energy storage system.

The payback period for investing in an energy storage system depends on several factors, including the cost of the system, the amount of energy you use, and the amount of money you can save on your electricity bills. Typically, the payback period ranges from 5-10 years, but it can vary depending on your specific circumstances.
